Iran has held an international conference on the Persian epic poet, Ferdowsi, hosting scholars and literary figures in the southeastern city of Zahedan.

Scholars, university professors and researchers from Iran, Egypt, France, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, India, the United States, Syria, and Malaysia have attended the event held in the University of Sistan and Baluchistan.

The conference has been held to analyze various aspects of the great 11th-century poet's life and his masterpiece, Shahnameh.

About 600 articles had been submitted to the conference from which 300 papers were selected by the committee, said conference secretary Maryam Jahantigh.

Iran's highly revered epic poet, Ferdowsi, is best known for his magnum opus Shahnameh which is a classic among epic Persian poetry and recounts Iran's mythical and historical past.

The book was written in Persian at a time when Arabic was the main scientific and literary language of Iran.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has named the year 2010 as the 1000th anniversary of the composition of Shahnameh.

The three-day conference kicked off on December 24, 2011.
