A member of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee says lifting a part of the sanctions against Iran is the best way to show the West’s goodwill in the upcoming Baghdad talks.

“The Iranian nation cannot see sanctions, threats and international pressure on the one hand, and believe the West’s message [of] resolving the Iranian nuclear energy issue through diplomatic channels on the other,” Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said Monday.

“Therefore, it is necessary for the P5+1 - the US, Britain, France, China, and Russia plus Germany - to prove their goodwill in the first step by limiting [anti-Iran] sanctions and by lifting some of them,” the lawmaker added.

Hosseini said after the West proves its goodwill by lifting the sanctions, Iran will be ready to take the next step, the Majlis official news agency, ICANA, reported.

Referring to Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano’s visit to Iran, Hosseini said the trip would lead to Tehran and the IAEA moving closer in their positions.

“Amano’s presence in Iran will certainly lead to a common understanding of Iran's nuclear activities,” he said.

Amano arrived in Tehran in the early hours of Monday, accompanied by Herman Nackaerts, the IAEA deputy director general for safeguards, and Rafael Mariano Grossi, the agency’s assistant director general for policy, and was welcomed by Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh.

Amano has met with high-ranking Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Fereydoun Abbasi.

The latest round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group was held in Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the talks as constructive.
