Former president Mohammad Khatami says some names cited as reformist presidential candidates are just speculations, ISNA reported on Thursday.

Khatami also said efforts should be made to broker a consensus among reformists in the run-up to the 2013 presidential election.

“My view is to reach a consensus among reformists,” Khatami told members of the central council of the Islamic Association of Students of Tehran University and Tehran Medical University.

The presidential election will be held late spring next year.

The former reformist president went on to say that “we should try to take steps forward and create changes whatever small.”

He reiterated on his previous position that efforts should be made to implement those clauses of the constitution which have not been enacted yet.

He added, “We are committed to Islam and oppose secularism on one hand and violence on the other.”

He also said it is part of reformists’ principles to “defend” the rights of anybody who does not seek to overthrow of the Islamic Republic system.
