Iran, UNICEF to Boost Cooperation in Assisting Quake-Hit Regions

Culture - Iran's Red Crescent Society and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) plan to increase joint efforts to assist people in the quake-hit areas of Northwestern Iran.

In a meeting with Secretary-General of Iranian Red Crescent Society Zahid Rostami, representative of the UNICEF in Iran Mohamed Monir Safieddin called for promoting cooperation to accelerate dispatch of emergency supplies to the victims.

The UNICEF is fully prepared to set sanitary wares, field baths and other facilities in a bid to control the spread of diseases in the areas, he added.

UNICEF is also ready to help collect garbage of the zones and run educational and recreational courses for children, Safieddin underscored.

Rostami, for his part, stressed that the Society is ready to deliver the emergency supplies provided by UNICEF.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted Ahar in East Azerbaijan province at 16:00 hours local time (1130GMT) on August 21. The epicenter of the quake was located in an area 46.8 degrees in longitude and 38.4 degrees in latitude.

Almost an hour later another quake with magnitude 6 on the Richter scale jolted Varzaqan at 17:04 hours local time (1234GMT) in the same province. The epicenter of the quake was located in an area 46.7 degrees in longitude and 38.4 degrees in latitude.

The twin quakes have claimed the lives of 306 people and injured more than 4500 others.
