Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has met with his Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Kamel Amr, on the sidelines of the high-level meeting of the Quartet Committee on Syria crisis in Cairo.

During the meeting on Tuesday in Egypt’s capital, Salehi expressed satisfaction over mutual contacts and interactions between the two countries’ officials, noting that such contacts will help the two nations to establish closer ties.

Referring to the Islamic Republic’s economic, industrial, scientific, technological and energy capabilities, Salehi expressed Iran's desire to promote cooperation with Egypt in various fields including science and education, trade, industry, energy and medicine.

The Iranian foreign minister said Iran's overall strategy with regard to its neighbors and regional countries is based on peace, cooperation and promotion of stability and security.

Amr, for his part, explained the latest domestic political and economic developments of his country.

During an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Mecca in mid-August, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi put forward a proposal for the establishment of a quartet group, comprising Iran, Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, to help resolve the Syrian crisis.

The high-level meeting of the quartet group on Syria was held on Monday about a week after preparatory talks in the Egyptian capital by lower-ranking officials from the four countries’ foreign ministries.
