Head of Iran’s Majlis [Parliament] Research Center says presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan aggravates insecurity and instability in the war-torn country.

“Long-term presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan reinforces extremist groups, an issue which would aggravate insecurity and instability in this country,” Kazem Jalali said in a meeting with Nicholas Haysom, deputy UN special envoy to Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Jalali added that complete withdrawal of foreign forces, transferring security and sovereign affairs to Afghan government, and reinforcing national reconciliation process are the most important factors in the establishment of lasting peace in Afghanistan.

The lawmaker also noted that Iran has taken many measures to help establish peace in Afghanistan and encourage progress in the country over the past three decades.

Heysom, for his part, said Iran has a vital and important role in finding a final solution to the situation in Afghanistan adding “Iran’s role is very important for stabilizing peace in Afghanistan in the framework of regional cooperation.”

He also thanked Iran for its positive role in establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan over the past years saying that it is very important for the United Nations to continue close consultations with Iranian officials on this issue.
