Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has slammed the use of human rights issues as a political tool by Western countries against independent nations.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the objectifying of human rights and its use as a tool against independent states,” Mehmanparast said Wednesday.

He added that in accordance with the country’s Constitution and Sharia law, the Islamic Republic considers supporting and helping to increase respect for human rights as one of its ideals.

“These [Western] countries exaggerate and demonize the human rights situation in Iran while they have not only closed their eyes on the dire rights situation in their allied countries and are unable to be answerable for the numerous violations of their own citizens’ rights,” Mehmanparast added.

On Tuesday, the General Assembly's Third Committee passed the non-binding resolution, which was drafted by Canada and co-sponsored by other Western countries, with 83 countries voting in favor, 31 against, and 68 abstentions.

During the meeting, many delegates criticized the use of such country-specific resolutions, which they said set double standards and undermined international cooperation in the promotion and protection of human rights.

Mehmanparast added that many of the so-called advocates of human rights have systematic and horrible cases of rights violations on their past and current records.

The Iranian official added that many parts of the UN resolution is based on the biased report of the UN special human rights rapporteur on Iran ,Ahmed Shaheed, which has no sources other than media websites affiliated with the Western sponsors of the resolution and anti-Iran groups.
