An Iranian lawmaker has censured a recent resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on human rights situation in Iran as “illegal.”

“The UN follows a selective and one-sided approach to human rights,” Mohammad-Ali Esfanani, spokesman of Iran Majlis Legal and Judicial Committee said on Saturday.

He added that such resolutions were a tool in the hands of Western countries to put pressure on Iran.

The Iranian lawmaker further stated that while the UN has remained silent on the massacre of Muslims in Syria, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Myanmar, it shows rapid reaction to an unfounded and baseless report about Iran.

In a report in October, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran Ahmed Shaheed accused Iran of various cases of human rights violations.

On Thursday, December 20, 2012, the UN General Assembly voted on a Canadian-sponsored resolution on alleged human rights violations in Iran. The 193-member body passed the measure 86-32 with 65 abstentions.

On Friday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast condemned the resolution as politically-motivated.

He said the fact that the anti-Iran measure was sponsored by countries which are themselves major violators of human rights proves the inefficiency of the UN human rights mechanisms and the Western states’ double standards toward the issue of human rights.

Mehmanparast added that Iran has always been committed to supporting and promoting respect for its citizens under the Islamic laws and the principles of its Constitution.
