Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the country plans to double gas production from the huge South Pars field in the next six months.

Stressing that Iran sits on one of the world’s most strategic gas reservoirs, Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that Iran plans to double gas extraction from the South Pars gas field by the end of his second term in office.

Ahmadinejad made the remarks during a ceremony to inaugurate Iran’s and the Middle East’s first and biggest natural gas storage facility.

Iran is currently producing 300 million cubic meters of gas per day from South Pars.

The country, which sits on the world's second largest natural gas reserves after Russia, has been trying to enhance its gas production by increasing foreign and domestic investments, especially in its South Pars gas field, which is the world’ biggest gas reservoir.

The South Pars gas field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are situated in Qatar's territorial waters.

The Iranian gas field holds 14 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and more than 18 billion barrels of LNG resources.
