An Iranian lawmaker says intensification of the Western sanctions against Iran will not stop the Iranian nation from reaching the summits of science and technology.

Member of the Majlis Foreign Policy and National Security Committee Mohammad Hassan Asafari said on Sunday that the US and Israel can never disrupt Iran's domestic affairs, particularly in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.

Asafari added that the Islamic Republic has attained self-sufficiency in every way and contrary to Western belief, the sanctions have not been effective against the Islamic Republic.

At the beginning of 2012, the United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Iran’s oil and financial sectors with the goal of preventing other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran. The sanctions entered into force last summer.

On October 15, 2012, EU foreign ministers reached an agreement on another round of sanctions against Iran.

The illegal US-engineered sanctions were imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence showing that the country's civilian nuclear program has been diverted toward military objectives.
