Iranian car drivers consumed 98 million liters of gasoline on March 31, 2013, which is a new record in the country.

The announcement was made by Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) Mostafa Kashkouli, who added that during the new Iranian year holidays total gasoline consumption rose by 10 percent when compared with similar period last year.

Average daily gasoline consumption reached 78 million liters per day over the New Year holidays and peaked on 31 Marchl, which is unprecedented in the country, the official said.

According to Kashkouli, Chalous city in Mazandaran province, North of Iran recorded the highest rate of gasoline consumption in the country, 53 percent higher in comparison to similar period last year.

Gilan and Semnan provinces registered the highest rate of gasoline consumption after Mazandaran province with respectively 49 and 36 percent growth.

Iranian New Year, called Norouz, started on 21 March. The New Year holidays last for about two weeks with mainly out of town travels.
