Presidential hopeful Ali-Akbar Velayati says he will pursue a policy of détente with neighboring countries should he win the June election.

Velayati, who is affiliated with the principlist Coalition of Three, noted that amicable ties with neighboring states would serve Iran’s national interests and guarantee its national security.

The former Iranian foreign minister also underscored the need to cut the general spending in order to have a more efficient administration.

Velayati, who currently serves as a senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, stated that he will do his utmost to ease sanctions slapped on Iran by Western governments.

The Coalition of Three also includes Tehran mayor, Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, and lawmaker, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel.

Iran’s 11th presidential election will be held on June 14, and presidential hopefuls can register from May 7 to 11.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election after the Guardian Council vets the candidates for qualifications.
