Canada’s claim on Iran is ridiculous: Iranian lawmaker

Politics - A senior Iranian lawmaker has censured the Canadian government for its recent unfounded claim that Iran was linked to a ‘terror plot’ in Canada, describing the allegation as “ridiculous.”

Chairman of Iran’s Majlis Committee for National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Tuesday that “the Canadian government might have mistaken Iran for Saudi Arabia,” stressing that Iran is no place for al-Qaeda.

The Iranian lawmaker also stated that Canada’s false claim was part of its Iranophobia policy.

On April 22, Canada said that its police had arrested two ‘foreign nationals’ who were planning to derail a VIA passenger train traveling between Toronto and New York, claiming that the suspects had links to “al-Qaeda elements inside Iran.”

On April 23, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast dismissed the unfounded allegation by the Canadian government as part of its Iranophobia campaign, saying that “al-Qaeda’s mindset is by no means congruent with [the ideology of] the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is the biggest victim of terrorism, but the extremist administration of Canada has put Iranophobia on its agenda over the recent years,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman stated.
