A group of Iranian lawmakers have filed a complaint with the judiciary against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for violating the Election Law through his open support for his close ally running for the presidency.

More than 150 lawmakers signed the complaint against Ahmadinejad for the 'illegal act' of accompanying his former chief of staff Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashaei to register for the June 14 presidential vote.

The legislators said Iran’s Election Law bans the use of state resources in favor of or against any candidate.

President Ahmadinejad has defended his actions, saying he had his day off on Sunday when he accompanied Rahim-Mashaei to the Interior Ministry.

The Guardian Council - the top body overseeing elections -has announced that the president's act constitutes a violation of law.

The registration for the 11th presidential election ended on Saturday with 686 individuals having signed up for the race.
