Head of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Public Relations Department General Ramezan Sharif denied media reports claiming that Iranian forces are fighting for the Damascus government.

“We categorically deny the presence of any Iranian battalion in Syria,” Sharif said.

“As frequently declared, Iran has no organizational battalion in Syria and is only present in the country at the level of military attachés to transfer its defense experiences to the defenders of Syria,” he added.

Media reports claimed on Sunday that member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Javad Karimi Qoddousi has confirmed Iran’s military presence in Syria, but the MP rejected the reports immediately.
Iranian officials have underlined on various occassions that Iran has only sent a number of attaches to Syria to transfer its defense experiences to the Syrian army under the two countries' defense and security pacts which were endorsed years ago.

Former Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi had also categorically denied unfounded reports on Iran's military presence in Syria in May, stressing that Tehran only supports consolidation of peace and tranquility in Syria and the region.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has not and will not dispatch military forces to Syria," Vahidi underscored.

He added that Iran's peace-seeking policy for stronger peace and tranquility in the region has prevented a blood bath in Syria.
