Iranian President Hassan Rouhani held a meeting with the families of the young Christians martyred while defending the country during the Iraqi-imposed war (1980-1988).

The meeting was held on Wednesday evening on the occasion of Christmas to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ (PBUH).

During the meeting, President Rouhani said that the Iranian religious minorities played a pivotal role during the 1979 Islamic Revolution as well as the Iraqi-imposed war against the country.

In the meeting, Christian war veterans who had made great sacrifices during the eight years of imposed war against Iran were also present.

Congratulating the Christmas, Rouhani described Jesus Christ (PBUH) as “the messenger of compassion and benevolence.”

“Iran belongs to all Iranians including Muslims, Christians and other religious minorities,” President Rouhani said, stressing that every Iranian citizen should make ultimate efforts to help the nation’s progress.

Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed cultural holiday, celebrated generally on December 25 by millions of people around the world.
