Iran President Hassan Rouhani says the nuclear deal between Tehran and the six world powers shows the West has finally recognized the Islamic Republic’s right to peaceful nuclear technology.

“The Geneva deal means the world’s acceptance of the peaceful technology which we have achieved through the efforts of young [Iranian] scientists,” Rouhani said in an address to people in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan on Tuesday.

“The Geneva agreement means acceptance of the Iranian nation’s nuclear right and defeat of cruel sanctions [against Iran],” the Iranian president added.

He emphasized that the nuclear deal proves that the unfair sanctions imposed on peace-loving Iranian nation have failed.

On Sunday, Iran and the Sextet of world powers – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US, and Germany – agreed to begin implementing the Geneva nuclear deal on January 20.

The deal was clinched on November 24, 2013, between Iran and the six powers in the Swiss city of Geneva, under which the six countries agreed to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.

It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions will be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.

The Iranian chief executive further vowed to defend the nation’s interests and to strongly protect the country.
