Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Islamic Republic is determined to maintain diplomatic ties with regional countries, particularly the Persian Gulf littoral states, to help the establishment of regional and world stability.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran after returning home from a two-day visit to Oman on Thursday, Rouhani underlined the need for the expansion of cooperation and interaction between Iran and the countries on the southern shores of the Persian Gulf.

Rouhani also described the Persian Gulf as a very sensitive region, adding that a large portion of his discussions with Omani authorities, the country’s ruler Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said in particular, centered on regional issues and the measures required to strengthen security and stability in the Persian Gulf region.

“The (Iranian) administration is determined to develop relations with all neighbors, especially countries in the sensitive Persian Gulf region in a manner that would benefit the stability of the region and the entire world,” he said.

The Iranian president further noted that a number of mutual agreements were signed during his trip to Muscat, the most important of which were on the export of natural gas, transportation, environment protection, job creation and joint investment in medicine and health tourism.

Commenting on his meeting with a group of Omani businessmen and Iranian merchants residing in Oman, Rouhani said they were briefed on Iran’s economic situation and investment environment during the meeting.

Rouhani travelled to Muscat on Wednesday at the invitation of the Omani king.
