Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Gholam Hossein Dehqani warned the international community against the major threat posed by Israel's nuclear arsenals to global peace and security, and called the regime the main impediment to the establishment of a nuclear-free region in the Middle-East.

Dehqani made the remarks after Israel opposed the inclusion of holding a conference on the establishment of a Middle-East free of nuclear weapons in the final document of the UN Disarmament Commission (UNDC) meeting held in New York on Friday.

"By this measure, Israel showed that not only its nuclear weapons and secret nuclear activities and its non-commitment to the international treaties on the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) are the main obstacle to the establishment of a region free from the nuclear weapons in the Middle-East, but also its unconstructive policies are preventing action by the international organization to support the practice of such a move," Dehqani said addressing the UNDC meeting in New York.

He also blasted the support of certain western nuclear powers for the Zionist regime's secret nuclear activities.

"Israel should desist from these policies and should implement the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s comprehensive safeguards at all its nuclear installations in addition to joining the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)," Dehqani stressed.

Iran, an NPT-signatory, has called for the removal of all weapons of mass destruction from across the globe.

The UN General Assembly approved a draft resolution proposed by Iran on nuclear disarmament in October 2009 amid strong opposition by the US, Britain, France, Israel and a number of western countries.

The resolution ratified in the first committee of the UN General Assembly calls on all nuclear countries to annihilate their nuclear weapons under the supervision of international bodies.

More than 100 countries, including non-nuclear members of the NAM, voted for the resolution.

The resolution also urges Israel to join the NPT and allow the IAEA to inspect its nuclear installations.
