Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, for a landmark visit to discuss key bilateral and regional issues.

Sheikh Sabah, on his first visit to Iran as head of state, was welcomed by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif upon his arrival at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport on Sunday.

The Kuwaiti Emir is making the two-day visit at the head of a high-level delegation comprising the ministers of foreign affairs, oil, finance, commerce and industry in addition to other senior officials.

He is visiting the Islamic Republic upon an official invitation by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani.

Addressing reporters at the airport, the Iranian foreign minister said Tehran attaches great significance to ties with Kuwait and expressed hope that the Kuwaiti Emir’s trip would "open a new chapter for the expansion of cooperation" between the two countries.

“We have historical and common interests with Kuwait and grounds are prepared for the expansion of relations,” Zarif added.

In a statement released on Monday, Kuwait’s cabinet expressed hope that Sheikh Sabah’s visit would strengthen “security, stability and peace in the region,” and upgrade Iran-Kuwait bilateral cooperation in various fields.
