Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham here on Wednesday described the appointment of Salim Al-Jabouri as the new Iraqi parliament speaker, a vital step towards completion of political process in this Arab country.

 

Pointing to the current sensitive situation in Iraq, Afkham underscored that the Iraqi lawmakersˈ measures to hold parliament sessions and appoint the presiding board carried a strong message for the opponents of political process and terrorists.

 

The Iraqi lawmakers indicated that under all circumstances they would protect the national interests of their country, she added.

 

Iraqi lawmakers have elected Al-Jabouri, a well-known moderate Sunni politician, as new parliament speaker on Tuesday.

 

Al-Jabouri managed to secure 194 of the 273 votes from Iraqi lawmakers.
