Chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi underscored the necessity for the establishment of security in Afghanistan by the local forces.

"The empowerment of military and law enforcement forces in Afghanistan should lead to the restoration of its internal and external security and stability by the local forces," Boroujerdi said in a meeting with Jan Kubis, the special representative of the UN secretary general for Afghanistan, in Tehran on Sunday.

Stressing that the terrorist groups active in the region are formed and supported by the US and its regional allies, he said, "We shouldn’t witness the presence of the foreign forces in Afghanistan again under the pretext of fighting terrorism like what happened in Iraq."

Kubis, for his part, appreciated Iran's continued humanitarian aids to Afghanistan and its hosting of the Afghan refugees for several years.

Iran is one of the most important donors to Afghanistan, which has kept its promises to help to the reconstruction of the war-ravaged country. The Iranian officials have always supported the national unity and integrity of Afghanistan.

Iran has built several roads, power transmission lines, border stations and many other infrastructure projects to better link the two nations.

Iran has also contributed more than $50mln annually to Afghan anti-narcotics efforts during the last five years.

In late January, Iran and Afghanistan signed an energy cooperation pact to further strengthen their cooperation in the electricity and water sectors.

Under the deal, the Islamic Republic will export more electricity to Afghanistan’s western provinces of Herat, Nimrouz, and Farah.
