VP: Iran to Continue Powerful Support for Iraqi Nation

Politics - Iran's First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi in Tehran on Tuesday voiced Tehran's continued strong support for the Iraqi nation and government.

"I assure you that the Islamic Republic of Iran will powerfully stay beside the great nation of Iraq, and victory will for sure be for that nation," Jahangiri said during the meeting.

The Iranian first vice-president, meantime, congratulated the Iraqi government and nation on the formation of the new cabinet in that country, and said, "I am confident that the Iraqi nation will overcome its problems and will become triumphant, given the Iraqi officials' wisdom."

The Iraqi prime minister, for his part, expressed his pleasure in his visit to Tehran, and said, "A number of economic ministers are accompanying me to strengthen the two countries' economic and trade relations."

Al-Abadi pointed to the threats of the terrorist groups for his country, and said, "These groups are trying to destroy the achievements that the Iraqi nation has gained in recent times and in the past 11 years."

Al-Abadi arrived in Tehran at the head of a high-ranking Iraqi delegation Monday night.

Prior to his arrival, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Marziyeh Afkham said Tehran and Baghdad are looking for the establishment of regional stability and tranquility through collective efforts of all countries in the region, and said the Iraqi prime minister's visit to Tehran will be aimed an expansion of regional security ties.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches special importance to the upcoming visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi to Tehran and believes that the prospects of mutual cooperation are very promising," Afkham said.

During the Iraqi prime minister's visit, the Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman said, the two states' officials would exchange views over the current complicated developments in the region and how to restore peace and stability in the region.

"Al-Abadi is to confer with high-ranking Iranian officials on the latest developments in the region to discuss ways to resolve the regional crises," Afkham added.
