Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Saturday congratulated the Nigerian nation and government on peaceful presidential election in the African country.

Afkham also congratulated Muhammadu Buhari on his election as the new Nigerian president.

"Holding calm elections and the respect shown by the presidential candidates to the election results indicates the Nigerian politicians and political parties' good and praiseworthy grasp of the importance of the situation and priorities of that big country," Afkham said.

Nigerian opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari defeated President Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria's presidential election few days ago.

Jonathan on Tuesday publicly conceded Buhari’s victory, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the nation.

“I thank all Nigerians once again for the great opportunity I was given to lead this country and assure you that I will continue to do my best at the helm of national affairs until the end of my tenure,” he said in a statement.

In the recent election, he received more votes in Nigeria’s Northwestern states, hit hardest by the acts of violence committed by Takfiri Boko Haram terrorists. In Borno state, for instance, he won 94 percent of the votes. Many had criticized Jonathan’s handling of the violence.
