Iran dismisses reports on talks with US over regional issues

Politics - Iran rejects media reports about talks between top Iranian and US diplomats on developments in the Middle East, saying the two sides only discussed the nuclear agreement of July 14.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Sunday dismissed reports that Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry had discussed the regional issues, including situation in Syria and Yemen, during their meeting in New York.

Afkham emphasized that Zarif and Kerry had no exchange of views on the regional issues, IRIB reported.

In the meeting between the Iranian foreign minister and the US secretary of state, Afkham said, Iran's nuclear program and necessary measures for the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) were discussed.

On Saturday, Zarif and Kerry held their first face-to-face meeting at the UN headquarters in New York since the conclusion of the landmark nuclear agreement in July. The Iranian foreign minister is in New York to attend the 70th annual session of the UN General Assembly.

Iran and the P5+1 – the United States, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany – finalized the text of the JCPOA in the Austrian capital of Vienna on July 14.

Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.
