Iran with 800 fishing vessels, ranks second in case of number of fishing vessels in the Indian Ocean after Indonesia.

Deputy Minister of Agricultural Jihad and Head of Iran Fisheries Organization Hassan Salehi said in the First Food and Health Festival on Friday that fishers from the Indian Ocean littoral states as well as the European and American countries are fishing in this region.

Iranian fishers catch 100 tons of fishes in every 50-day fishery trip, he added.

Salehi noted that the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad plans to fish in depth of 300 meters and aims to increase its caviar production to 100 tons by 2025.

He said production of shrimps in some countries including Thailand has decreased, but Iran produced 20,000 tons in the previous Iranian year (ended March 20, 2017).

According to Iran's 6th Development Plan, the country will produce 200,000 tons of fish through farming cage systems, Salehi added.
