During the Joint Commission of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Friday, which was chaired by EEAS Secretary-General Helga Schmid on behalf of the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, the recent report of IAEA in confirming Iran’s commitment to the nuclear deal was presented and welcomed.
Other topics of the meeting were positive developments of Arak heavy water reactor, future peaceful nuclear cooperation and procurement.
“They also reviewed the status of the sanctions-lifting during which the Chair underlined the need to implement the JCPOA in good faith and in all its provisions,” reads the statement of EEAS.
The statement also highlighted “the consistent trend of economic engagement as reflected by the latest announcements of major trade and investment deals”.
Iran’s National Oil Company (NIOC) on July 3 signed a multi-billion-dollar agreement with an international consortium, headed by the French oil giant,Total, to develop the phase 11 of the South Pars gas field.
In the Joint Commission meeting, held at the level of Political Directors/Deputy Foreign Ministers on the second anniversary of signing the JCPOA, all parties emphasized their adherence to the agreement and the “effective implementation in a constructive atmosphere.”
The historic agreement between Iran and the group known as 5+1 (the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany) was signed in July 2015. Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear program in return of relief of economic sanctions.
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi at the end of the meeting stressed that the Joint Commission sends the message of all parties' support of the JCPOA to the world.
He, at the same time, affirmed that Iran was not convinced on the US committment to the agreement. Emphasizing that Washington should be held accountable, the diplomat reiterated that Tehran reserve the right of reacting to the disloyalty.
