President Hassan Rouhani said here on Wednesday that Islamic Republic of Iran supports Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

President Rouhani made the remarks prior to his departure for Russia to attend the tripartite summit of Iran, Russia and Turkey to be held in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi today (Nov 22).

The president added that the Iranian government is committed to maintain peace in the region.

President Rouhani said that Iran is after 'negotiations not confrontation', adding that
terrorist activities and foreign meddling would be defeated in the region.

He stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran would continue its counter-terrorism efforts until the full elimination of terrorism in the region.

Iranian President also expressed hope that the trilateral summit in Sochi, attended by his Russian and Turkish counterparts, would bring about fruitful results for Syria.

President Rouhani said the future of Syria will not be in foreign forces' hands.

Touching upon the recent developments and the Islamic Republic's approach for maintaining peace and tranquility in the Middle East, President Rouhani expressed regret over the escalation of insecurity, uproar and terrorists acts in the region during the past six years.

He also stressed that the US and the Zionist regime have been defeated in their interference in the regional countries' affairs.

Hailing Russia's standing by the regional countries in counter-terrorism efforts, President Rouhani reiterated that terrorists would not achieve any victories in the region in future.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey will meet on November 22 at the trilateral summit in Sochi, where they will discuss 'the entire Syrian agenda.”
