“I believe that Europeans and the West, in general, do not basically seek to clear misunderstandings; rather, they intend to constantly keep Iran's peaceful nuclear [energy] activities in the limelight to overshadow Iran's impact on other issues,” said Vahid Ahmadi, a member of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.
The lawmaker noted that the EU embargoes against Iran are not new as the Islamic Republic has been faced with such threats since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, IRNA reported on Friday.
Iran has always managed to proceed on its path and no arrogant power has been able to undermine the country’s resolve, the legislator pointed out.
He emphasized that such hostile measures may inflict difficulties on Iran, but “they will definitely fail to impede the Iranian nation’s progress.”
Following their latest round of negotiations in the Russian capital, Moscow, in June, Iran and the P5+1 - China, Russia, France, Britain, the US and Germany - held expert-level talks in Istanbul on Tuesday.
On January 23, the EU agreed to ban oil imports as well as petroleum products from Iran and freeze the assets of Iran’s Central Bank across the EU over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
The sanctions, which went into effect on July 1, are the result of claims by Washington and some of its Western allies that Iran's nuclear energy program contains a military component.
Iran has strongly refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful ends.
