Iraq endorses Iran's view that foreign intervention in Syria poses a grave danger to the people of that country and the region, and that the Syrian issue should be resolved through popular reforms in the country, Baghdad's envoy to Tehran said.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an international conference on Syria here in Tehran on Thursday, Iraq's Ambassador to Iran Majid al-Sheikh said the Syrian people are seeking reforms "but not those reforms that are imposed from outside".

"Rather they are looking for reforms from inside," he continued, and added, "Any change in this country should be done by the Syrians themselves."

He further reminded the current sensitive juncture, and reiterated, "Iraq has explicitly underlined the need for non-intervention in this country by foreign parties."

The envoy said foreign meddling in Syria is a grave danger to not just the people of that country, but the entire region, and stated, "Like Iran we, too, believe that reforms should be popular."

Sheikh viewed the Tehran International Consultative Conference on Syria as "useful", and underlined Tehran's "crucial role in regional developments, particularly with regard to Syria".

The international consultative conference on the developments in Syria kicked off work in Tehran on Thursday.
