Iran Agrees with General Points of Egyptian Initiative on Syria

Politics - The quartet meeting in Cairo ended last night after Iran voiced agreement with the general points stated in the Egyptian initiative on the Syria crisis.

Deputy foreign ministers from Iran, Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia gathered in Cairo last evening to find a solution to the current crisis in Syria. Iran was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian at the meeting.

At the meeting, participants raised the views of their governments about the solution to the Syrian crisis.

Iran voiced its agreement with the general points of the Egyptian offer and the statement issued by the Egyptian foreign ministry at the meeting, sources said.

Yet, Iran has asked for the inclusion of Iraq, the head of the Arab League (AL), and Venezuela, as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) troika, in the contact group, they said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said that originally, Egyptian President Mohammad Mursi had suggested a gathering of four countries, but Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggested that two more countries be added in this group.

"Originally it was proposed that the foreign ministers of the six countries should meet in Egypt, but then, for various reasons, it was decided that experts from the six countries should take part in the first gathering in Cairo, Egypt," Iranian foreign minister said.

"Following this, experts from six countries gathered in Cairo Egypt on Monday to discuss the situation in Syria, and find a way to end the violence in the Arab country," he added
