A member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) Education and Research Committee Qassem Ahmadi Lashaki says the US does not practically comply with laws which are based on human rights norms.

Recalling Iran’s request from developing countries to oppose the US membership in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Lashaki said “Iran believes that human rights must be observed by all [nations] and it’s every country’s right ... to become a member of the Human Rights Council, but the notable problem is that Washington does not comply with laws which are based on human rights and only uses them to achieve its political goals.”

Lashaki stated that the recent ban on the broadcast of several Iranian satellite channels in Europe shows that the US and the West do not tolerate any voice other than their own.

On Saturday, November 10, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman called on the UN members to oppose Washington’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council in the upcoming General Assembly voting slated for November 12.

The Iranian official added that according to the council’s statute, only countries with a clean human rights record have the right to join UNHRC mentioning Washington’s involvement in killing civilians, torturing people in secret prisons and anti-Islam campaign as some examples of the US human rights violations.
