An Iranian lawmaker says the Western powers use terrorist attacks to provoke the Syrian opposition groups and hamper national reconciliation dialogue in the Arab state.

“The West is trying to impede the Syrian national reconciliation talks by provoking the Syrian opposition before the negotiations [take place],” Hossein Sobhaninia said on Saturday.

He went on to say that after 23 months of unrest and crisis, the Syrian opposition groups have realized that they are not able to overthrow the popular government of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“The call for national reconciliation talks by the [Syrian] opposition after all their warmongering in [the Syrian capital] Damascus shows that the West with the aid of rebels has never been able to reach its goals in Syria,” Sobhaninia added.

The lawmaker further pointed to the recent bomb attack in Damascus, which killed tens of people, noting that whenever armed militants are defeated by the Syrian army, they resort to terrorist attacks in heavily populated areas.

He also pointed out that the massacre of people in Damascus by the extremist terrorist groups that are supported by some regional countries will be dangerous to both the Syrian government and the opposition groups.

On February 21, at least 53 people lost their lives and 250 others were injured in a powerful bomb explosion near the headquarters of Syria’s ruling Baath Party and the Russian Embassy in Damascus.

The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the armed terrorist groups.
