Tehran started generation of electricity from the garbage hills produced by its over 10 million population, Tehran Mayor's Deputy for Civil Services Mojtaba Abdollahi announced on Sunday.

"Generation of electricity from garbage started in District 4 of Tehran's municipality," Abdollahi told.

He said that Tehran's municipality has spent over $8mln for implementing the project to produce electricity from garbage.

In December 2010, a senior official at Tehran's municipality announced that the city is in talks with three investors to build a recycling plant to use the city garbage for power generation.

"As regards power plant construction, we are currently in talks with 14 sides which have submitted their proposals and the negotiations with three of them are in final stages," Head of Tehran's Municipality Department for Civil Services Hossein Kalkhorani said at the time.
