“Having an understanding of Syria and the region, we can say that in the event of any attack, dangerous, unanticipated and unexpected developments will take place for the opposing front,” Amir-Abdollahian said in an interview with al-Alam on Monday.
He said that measures taken by regional and transregional sides have turned Syria into a hub of extremism, al-Qaeda, terrorist activities and exporting violence to neighboring countries.
He added that these parties now seek to drag Syria into a new war to finish up their already taken tasks.
Regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Amir-Abdollahian said, that such weapons were used in Syria by certain irresponsible armed groups.
“We have accurate information that certain foreign sides have supplied terrorist groups [with such weapons]so that they can use chemical weapons against the Syrian people and army and in this manner cause [public outrage] in order to call for foreign intervention to determine the fate of Syria.”
The US, Israel and Britain accuse Syria of using chemical weapons against foreign-backed militants. This is while two Syrian officials on Friday denied allegations that the government has used chemical weapons against militants, saying Damascus has no need for them.
Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations, Bashar al-Jaafari, said Sunday that Western states have raised the issue of possible use of chemical weapons in Syria as a pressure tactic against his country.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian troops and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that large numbers of the militants are foreign nationals.
