Iran's Ahmadinejad Leaves for Moscow Today to Attend GECF

Politics - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Tehran for Moscow on Monday to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 2nd summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), an official report said.

President Ahmadinejad headed to Russia at the head of a high-ranking delegation to attend the second summit of the GECF later today. The two-day summit will kick off in the Grand Kremlin Palace and will be chaired by the Russian president, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela are the eleven members of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.

The gas cartel is still officially known as the Gas Forum, but major exporters Iran and Russia last year started a move to change the body into an OPEC like organization called the Organization of Gas Exporting Countries (OGEC).

Iran, Russia, Qatar, Venezuela and Algeria are among the GECF's member states which possess 42% of the world's gas reserves.
