Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi extended his condolences over the killing of an Iranian documentary producer, Hadi Baqbani, in Syria, saying those states arming and supporting militants in that country should account for the death of the Iranian filmmaker.

Araqchi condemned the armed rebels' attack on the life of the Iranian artist, and stressed the need for the protection of the lives of reporters and journalists in combat zones.

"The responsibility of the martyrdom of this Iranian reporter and documentary producer lies on the shoulder of those states which encourage Syrian armed groups to massacre the Syrian people and foreign nationals in that country through dispatching arms and financial supports to these groups.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran demands international circles to pursue this case and also fulfill their responsibility for protecting the lives of reporters and media personnel on duty in critical conditions," the spokesman stressed.

Iranian journalist and documentary producer Hadi Baqbani was killed by the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front in a suburb of Damascus on Tuesday.

The Iranian journalist had traveled to Syria to make a documentary on the ongoing crisis in the country.

Iran's charge d'affaires in Damascus Abbas Golrou confirmed Baqbani's decease on Wednesday.

It is not the first time that a member of the media comes under attack by the foreign-sponsored militants in Syria.

Press TV correspondent Maya Naser was shot and killed by a militant sniper while reporting live on September 26, 2012. He was being accompanied by Hossein Mortada, who was also injured in the attack.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced in the violence.

According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
