The secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council has warned that US military intervention in Syria will get out of hand and turn into a “political quagmire” for Washington.

“Americans are planning to attack Syria presuming that the countries around Syria including Palestine, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq are insecure and instable, and the flames of war will not spread to those countries, which is a wrong and dangerous presumption,” Mohsen Rezaei said on Thursday.

“With the protraction of war, a kind of humanitarian and Islamic solidarity could take shape in the region and in the world that can turn this country into a political quagmire for the US, which would take [Washington] years to get out of,” Rezaei added.

Despite Washington's claims, the official said, the US warmongering is aimed at strengthening the US footing in the oil-rich Middle East, undermining the influence of China, Iran and Russia in the region, and saving the Israeli regime from the siege that has been laid to it by the resistance front and the Islamic Awakening.

“If a war breaks out in Syria, it will be limited but the challenge arising from it will linger on for many years to come,” he warned.

Rezaei expressed hope that Europeans and Americans will prevent a new act of “adventurism” by their governments to save the lives of thousands of soldiers in a war that would also inflict serious damage on the innocent people of Syria.

The US war rhetoric against the Arab country intensified after Syria militants claimed the army had carried out a deadly chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, which killed hundreds of Syrians.

The Syrian government has repeatedly said the deadly attack was a false-flag operation carried out by the militants in a bid to draw in foreign military intervention.

On August 31, US President Barack Obama delayed an imminent military strike against Syria to seek approval for the move from Congress, which will debate the issue when lawmakers return from recess on September 9.

The Obama administration has, however, said it “has the right” to attack Syria even if the Congress does not approve the measure.
