Iran will play the United States for only the third time ever, Iranian Football Federation President Ali Kafashian said on Thursday.

“U.S. football officials are interested in holding a four-team tournament, featuring the U.S., Iran, a South American team, and a European team,” the Iranian media quoted Kafashian as saying.

“We received approval from the U.S. federation to attend the tournament,” he added.

The Iranian and U.S. soccer teams have played twice before. Iran defeated the U.S. 2-1 in a game at the 1998 World Cup in France. And Iran and the U.S. played to a 1-1 draw in a match in Pasadena, California two years later.

Iran and the United States have both already qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
