Iran’s Rouhani hails Majlis for vote of confidence

Politics - Iran President Hassan Rouhani has expressed his appreciation for Majlis vote of confidence to two of his proposed Cabinet ministers.

Addressing the Cabinet session on Sunday, President Rouhani thanked the lawmakers for holding discussions about the qualifications of his proposed nominees for the three remaining vacancies in his Cabinet.

Majlis on Sunday endorsed two of President Rouhani’s proposed Cabinet nominees but did not give a vote of confidence to the third candidate.

Ali Asghar Fani succeeded in winning the Majlis vote of confidence as the Minister of Education after 185 lawmakers voted in favor, 53 against and 24 abstained.

Majlis also approved Reza Faraji Dana as Minister of Science, Research and Technology with 159 votes in favor, 70 against and 32 abstentions out of total votes cast by 261 lawmakers.

However, President Rouhani’s choice for minister of sports and youth, Reza Salehi Amiri, lost the Majlis confidence vote as 141 legislators voted against, 107 in favor and 13 abstained. A total of 261 lawmakers cast their votes.

Meanwhile, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani called on the Iranian president to name a new minister of sports and youth as soon as possible.
