Iranian President Hassan Rouhani underlined that the approval of Tehran’s proposal under the name of ‘World against Violent Extremism (WAVE) Act’ at the UN General Assembly was a victory for the Iranian nation and government.

President Rouhani had in his address at the annual UN General Assembly meeting in September highlighted the dire need for establishment of an international coalition against terrorism and extremism, dubbed ‘World against Violence and Extremism’.

The United Nations overwhelmingly voted on Wednesday December 18 to adopt the Iranian-authored resolution that calls on nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism.

Addressing his cabinet ministers on Sunday, Rouhani said that he did not initially expect the initiative to receive such a broad-scale international welcome so soon, adding that even Israel, despite its opposition, did not dare to vote against the resolution due to the existence of an international consensus in its favor.

“The message of this resolution, which is so enthusiastically welcomed internationally today, is the Iranian nation’s call for adopting a moderate approach, chanted by them during the August 15th Iranian presidential election,” he said.

Rohani said that the Islamic Republic of Iran thus gained another success at the international scene despite the opposite will of the racist Zionists, making the opponents’ plot aimed at segregation of Iran face defeat.

He considered the resolution in question as a victory not only for his government, but also for the Iranian nation and Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
