Iranian President Hassan Rouhani invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to pay an official visit to Iran in the near future.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif extended President Rouhani’s invitation to President Putin in a meeting in Moscow on Thursday.

During the meeting in the Russian capital, the President Putin welcomed the invitation, and said, “I hope to visit Tehran very soon.”

On Wednesday night, Zarif arrived in Moscow for talks with senior Russian officials over issues of bilateral and regional importance. The visit came following his tour of some regional countries, including Lebanon, Iraq and Syria.

During his visit to Moscow, the Iranian foreign minister also met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. The two foreign ministers exchanged views on global and regional issues, including ways to deal with the growing wave of extremism and terrorism in the region.

The Iranian foreign minister returned to Tehran on Friday morning.
