Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani underlined that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) can pave the way for boosting unity among Muslims, and called on Muslim assemblies to do their best to strengthen the Union.

“The IPU which was founded with the membership of some 52 Islamic parliaments has established close cooperation with 22 international organizations,” said Larijani at the opening ceremony of the 31st Executive Committee of the IPU in Tehran on Friday.

He emphasized that the Islamic parliaments can establish close relations with the various Muslim nations and reflects the demands of their nations in practice through membership in the parliamentary union of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“An inter-parliamentary union can serve as a center for comprehending the demands of the Islamic Ummah (nation) and pursing their implementation through various ways,” added the parliament speaker.

“This conference is focusing on the advancements of the Islamic countries and the motto of the international event is Solidarity, Advancement and Justice,” he said.

Larijani also highlighted the significance of the IPU Executive Committee, due to its role in paving the path for decision makings of the IPU Conference.

On Wednesday, Iranian Parliament Speaker’s advisor for international affairs Hossein Sheikholeslam announced that over 25 parliament speakers, 10 vice-speakers, and 50 parliamentary delegations are to participate in the 9th Meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tehran.

The first three days of the meeting is to be held at the level of experts and the Muslim world parliament speakers will take part in the event in the last two days.

“Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameron, Chad, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Oman, Pakistan , Palestine, Senegal, Syria, Tajikistan, Togo, Turkey, Yemen, Algeria, Comoros, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Uganda, the UAE, Sudan, Kyrgyzstan and Libya are the countries which have so far confirmed their presence in the OIC parliamentary meeting,” Sheikholeslam said on Saturday.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, formerly Organization of the Islamic Conference, was established in 1969 and has 57 members. The organization aims to promote dialogue between Islamic countries and the rest of the world and also protect the interests of Muslims when necessary.

The OIC Parliamentary Union has 53 members.
