Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Tehran is determined to expand its cooperation with the Persian Gulf littoral states.

“Expanding ties with the regional countries and the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]GCC) is the principled policy of Iran,” Amir-Abdollahian, who is on an official visit to Qatar, said in a meeting with Qatari assistant for foreign affairs, Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi, on Sunday.

He also stressed that the Islamic Republic and Qatar have numerous opportunities for expanding and enhancing mutual ties, saying that Tehran is ready to expand political and economic cooperation with Doha.

Rumaihi, for his part, called for the expansion and enhancement of mutual ties between the two countries, and welcomed new rounds of regional talks between Tehran and Doha.

He also said Qatar has always favored an advanced, developed and stable Iran.

Referring to an interim deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – Russia, China, France, Britain and the US – plus Germany, the Qatari official said that his country supports the agreement and countries’ right to use peaceful nuclear technology.

The deal between Iran and the six powers was clinched on November 24, 2013 in the Swiss city of Geneva. Under the Geneva deal, which was implemented on January 20, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period.

It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions will be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.
