Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani was elected on Monday as the chairman of Public Committee of the OIC Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for a one-year period.

During the 16th Meeting of Public Committee of the IPU of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Tehran, Larijani was elected to the post by the OIC member states' top parliamentarians who also elected the Nigerian and Tunisian speakers as Larijani's first and second deputies, respectively.

On Wednesday, Iranian Parliament Speaker’s advisor for international affairs Hossein Sheikholeslam announced that over 25 parliament speakers, 10 vice-speakers, and 50 parliamentary delegations are to participate in the 9th Meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tehran.

The first three days of the meeting started work on Friday and was held at the level of experts.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, formerly Organization of the Islamic Conference, was established in 1969 and has 57 members. The organization aims to promote dialogue between Islamic countries and the rest of the world and also protect the interests of Muslims when necessary.

The OIC Parliamentary Union has 53 members.
