Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is due to travel to Masqat on Wednesday, a senior diplomat said, adding that he will be accompanied by a vice-president and four high-ranking ministers.

“President Rouhani will arrive in Masqat on Wednesday morning and his meetings and talks (with senior Omani officials) will start a while after an official ceremony to welcome him,” Iranian Ambassador to Oman Ali Akbar Sibouyeh said in an interview with Times of Oman daily on Tuesday.

He said that Rouhani will be accompanied by the foreign, oil, industry and road ministers as well as the first vice-president and a number of other high-ranking officials during the two-day visit.

Sibouyeh added that the bilateral relations and regional issues, specially the situation in Syria, will be discussed by the Iranian and Omani officials during Rouhani's trips to the Arab Persian Gulf nation.

“Four or five agreements are expected to be signed by the two countries during the president's visit to Masqat, two of which will be related to transportation and technical trainings,” he said.

Iranian officials have repeatedly underlined that they attach great importance to the consolidation of Tehran's relations with the Middle-East countries, specially with the Persian Gulf littoral states, in order to protect and promote peace and security in the region.

In a recent development, Iran and Oman signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) earlier this month in a bid to boost mutual cooperation in various fields of civil aviation, specially in passenger and cargo transportation.

The MoU was signed in a meeting between Head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization Ali Reza Jahangirian and his Omani counterpart Mohammed bin Nasser bin Ali Al-Za’abi in Masqat.

“During meeting with Al-Za’abi, we discussed expansion of air transportation cooperation between the two countries,” Jahangirian said.

He described removal of obstacles and restrictions on cargo flights between the two countries and increasing the number of passenger flights to 30 from the current 14 as important parts of the MoU.
