First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri said on Tuesday that Iran is fully prepared for stronger defense and military cooperation with the Azerbaijan republic.

Jahangiri nade the remarks in a meeting with Azerbaijani Defense Minister General Zakir Hasanov in Tehran.

Jahangiri said Iran wants strong Azerbaijan in its neighborhood regarding abundant cultural, historical and religious commonalties.

He said Iranˈs foreign policy attaches high significance to expansion of relations with the neighbors and that Azerbaijan having special position among them.

Noting that volume of mutual commercial and economic transactions is far below the expected level, Jahangiri said that the two sides should identify and remove impediments and take essential steps to augment trade ties.

Jahangiri said that Tehran-Baku relations are excellent citing the visit to Tehran of the Azeri President Ilham Aliyev last week and his meeting with President Hassan Rouhani.

Jahangiri said that the two presidents touched regional and bilateral issues, reaching good agreements citing signature of of the four agreements in presence of the two presidents.

The Azeri minister for his part said his talks with the Iranian counterpart was positive and constructive.

ˈThere is abundant capacity available for mutual defense cooperation as the two countries share common views on regional and global issues.ˈ

He hoped that his visit to Tehran would help upgrade Tehran-Baku relations.
