Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei pardoned or commuted prison terms of a large number of female convicts sentenced by various Iranian courts on the occasion of the National Women's (Mother's) Day.

Ayatollah Khamenei on Sunday agreed to pardon and commute jail terms of scores of female prisoners on the occasion of the Women's Day, marking the birthday anniversary of Hazrat Fatemeh (AS), the Prophet's daughter, the wife of Shiite Islam's first Imam and the mother of Shiites' second and third Imams.

Hazrat Fatemeh's birth anniversary has been designated as Women's (and Mother's) Day in Iran. The 20th day of the lunar Islamic month of Jamadi al-Sani marks the birth anniversary of Hazrat Fatemeh (AS) daughter of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The amnesty was granted upon a request by Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani and approval of the Supreme Leader.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Supreme Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The Article does not apply to all types of convicts, specially those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the Islamic Republic, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery and embezzlement.
