More than 300 Pakistani pilgrims were returning from the ceremonies marking the 25th demise anniversary of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, when the Jeish Al-Islam terrorist group attacked them.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns terrorist actions on innocent people from any tribe and religion in Pakistan, and hopes that recurrence of such terrorists acts against the defenseless people will be prevented through the adoption of the necessary measures," Afkham said on Monday.
The attack occurred on Sunday night when unidentified terrorists invaded a hotel in Taftan, Pakistan, near the Iranian border, killing and wounding a number of the pilgrims.
Jeish Al-Islam in a later statement claimed responsibility for the Sunday attack on Pakistani pilgrims.
Pakistan's Balouchestan Provincial Minister Sarfaraz Bakti told reporters that more than 300 Pakistani pilgrims were attacked on Sunday, 100 of them in critical conditions.
He noted that four assailants have been killed in heavy clashes with Pakistani security forces on Sunday night.
Iranian border guards in Sistan and Balouchestan Province rushed to Pakistan's soil to assist the neighboring country's guards who were fighting the terrorists after they received a relevant request from their Pakistani counterparts.
