Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said Tehran was investigating the case of an Iranian national who died in a Philippine prison.

Talking to reporters during weekly press briefing here on Wednesday, she explained that Parviz Khaki was arrested 27 months ago and kept in a Manila prison upon the request of American officials.

He died on August 18, 2014 for unknown reasons but apparently due to improper conditions.

Afkham said the US was seeking extradition of Khaki to America and severely pressed the Philippines officials over the issue.

Foreign Ministry has been constantly following the case by carrying out legal action and using diplomatic channels, she added.

Afkham stressed that the US government which presses other countries to provide for its illegitimate interests under the guise of human rights, once again prepared the ground for the arrest of the Iranian national in the Philippines in total disregard of all human rights principles
